In October 1911, during the Italian War with the Ottoman Empire, the Italian navy invaded the Libyan coast. Libya was then part of the Turkish Empire. The Italians call on Libya to surrender. But instead of surrendering, Turkish troops and their Libyan allies left the coast and retreated. The Italian invading forces bombed Tripoli and Benghazi for three days.
The people of the Sirenaika region of Libya continue to fight one resistance war after another under the leadership of Umar Mukhtar Rahmatullah Yalai. Umar Mukhtar, an expert in desert warfare, became an eyesore for the Italian army. For 20 years, Umar Mukhtar defeated the Italian forces of guerrilla warfare. Finally, on 11 September 1931, Mukhtar was wounded and taken prisoner in a surprise attack. Five days later, the panicked Italian occupiers hanged him and martyred him.
Historically, Umar Mukhtar, known as the Lion of the Desert, was asked by Mussolini's Italian army officer: Do you know your death sentence? In reply, Umar Mukhtar said, "Yes."
The officer said, "Do you regret what you did?" Umar Mukhtar said, "There is no question, I have fought for my country and people."
The judge of the army court looked at him and said, "I am sorry to see the fate of a man like you."
Umar Mukhtar said, "But this is the best way to end my life. Thank God Almighty for giving me the opportunity to be martyred like a hero." Allahu Akbar
The judge then offered to release him if he wrote a letter to the Mujahideen asking them to stop fighting the Italians. In response to this proposal, Umar Mukhtar looked at the judge and said:
"The martyrdom finger with which I testify every day that there is no god but one God. I cannot write untruths with that finger. We do not surrender to anyone but one God. We either win or become martyrs." Allahu Akbar
Yes! This is the glorious history of the Aqabirs of our Sunni Sufism (Umar Mukhtar was the son of Sanusi Tariqa). Our forefathers have set an example of such heroism. But today Sufism is being restricted to singing, dancing of men and women, prostrating to other than Allah! Alas! How much our Sufism has fallen!
May Allah grant us the tawfiq to follow these Buzurgs, that is, true Sufism.
Thank s
